M/T Trans Emerald completes first biofuel bunkering

On April 18, the oil/chemical tanker M/T Trans Emerald, registered in Malta, completed its first bunkering of biofuel at the Port of Rotterdam. This marks an important milestone in the ship’s journey towards greener operations and compliance with the EU’s FuelEU Maritime regulation.

The operation was made possible through excellent collaboration between the vessel’s crew, technical manager Stödig Ship Management, local agent Euro Nordic Rotterdam, Bergen Bunkers, and Seatrans Chemical tankers. Their coordinated efforts ensured a smooth and efficient bunkering process – a clear example of how strong teamwork helps move the maritime sector toward more sustainable practices.

Supporting the energy transition in shipping

The use of alternative fuels in shipping is a key pillar of the FuelEU Maritime initiative, which aims to reduce greenhouse gas emissions from shipping by considering the entire fuel lifecycle – from production to use (“well-to-wake”). The regulation sets clear and ambitious targets for gradually reducing emissions in the maritime sector, with the goal of reaching net-zero by 2050, in line with the EU Green Deal.

The use of biofuel on M/T Trans Emerald is not only about regulatory compliance. It is part of a gradual approach to testing alternative fuels and assessing their potential to reduce emissions. This initiative is one of several steps being explored to support more responsible operational decisions going forward.

“We are proud that the biofuel bunkering on M/T Trans Emerald was completed as planned. This demonstrates our dedication to efficient operations and our ongoing efforts to reduce our environmental impacts,” said Operations Manager in SCT, Jonleif Danielsen.
